Commissioned by the HKSAR Government Education Bureau Chief Curriculum Development Office (Gifted Education), the HKYSTIC 11-12 was organized by the Hong Kong New Generation Cultural Association Science Innovation Centre, and was sponsored this year by the H.S. Chau Foundation and the Hongkong Bank Foundation.
Aimed at strengthening students’ creativity, practical skills and promoting science and creativity education, the Hong Kong Youth Science and Technology Invention Competition (HKYSTIC) 11-12 received an overwhelming response from local students, attracting a total of near 4,000 entries from over 7,000 participants belonging to 400 kindergartens, primary and secondary schools, with categories including Science Fiction Drawing, Invention and Research as well as Science and Technology Practical Activity.
The final judging of the competition was held on 31 March 2012 at Rotunda 1, Kowloonbay International Trade and Exhibition Centre. Aligning to the format of international science competitions, the final judging has been changed to an open booth style since last year, in which near 300 contestants of the Invention and Research Category and Practical Activity Category have set booths for project display in order to present their entries to the judging panel and to respond to the panel’s questions. Following the final judging session was an exhibition which allowed members of the public to interact with the contestants and to see their projects.
The Award Ceremony of the competition was also successfully held on 1 April 2012 at the Auditorium, Kowloonbay International Trade and Exhibition Centre. More than 200 awards were presented to the winners which included 13 First Place Grand Awards, 23 Second Place Grand Awards, 27 Third Place Grand Awards, 104 Merits and various special awards. The project “Ideal Microbial Fuel Cell” by Pun Chun Sang, Wong Yiu Tak and Tsui Yung Kin Samuel from Chinese Foundation Secondary School was highly praised by the judging panel and was awarded First Place Grand Award in Energy and Environmental Science, Best Project Award (Senior Section) and Intel International Science and Engineering Fair Affiliated Fair Special Awards - Ricoh Americas Corporation. This group of students will also represent HKSAR in the 63rd Intel International Science and Engineering Fair held in Pittsburgh, U.S. in May. All the prize-winners were awarded with scholarship sponsored by the H.S. Chau Foundation and the Hongkong Bank Foundation and other prizes with total value of over HK$200,000!
